Navy Wins in Sonar Case
In the most significant environmental case of its new term and its first ruling of the term, the high court threw out a federal judge's injunction that had required the Navy to take precautions during submarine-hunting exercises. Environmental groups brought the lawsuit and said the intense sound waves can harm or even kill 37 species of marine mammals, including sea lions and endangered blue whales, by interfering with their ability to navigate and communicate. Chief Justice John Roberts, who wrote the opinion for the court's conservative majority, said the overall public interest in the case tipped strongly in favor of the Navy. He said the Navy's need to conduct realistic training with active sonar to respond to the threat posed by enemy submarines outweighed the interests advanced by the environmentalists. The court lifted the restrictions in the injunction that the Navy had challenged, including a requirement that it stop using sonar when marine mammals are spotted within 2,200 yards (2,012 metres) and to reduce sonar decibel levels under certain ocean conditions.
American Carbon -- NASA Map of Carbon Emissions
In April 2008, atmospheric scientist Kevin Gurney and several colleagues from Purdue, Colorado State University, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory published the first detailed inventory of carbon dioxide emissions from the burning of fossil fuels across the United States. Known as the Vulcan Project, for the Roman god of fire, the inventory catalogues how much carbon dioxide different human activities produce on an hourly, daily, and monthly basis-from vehicles to industrial activity to electricity used by homes or businesses........[See the Map below with link to information]
Obama climate policy caught in Democratic tussle
A fight within the Democratic Party over control of the House Energy and Commerce Committee could influence the outcome of President-elect Obama’s efforts to limit the heat-trapping gases blamed for global warming. Obama has said he wants to act quickly on climate change. But crucial bipartisan support could be tested if…..
Canada Seeks Climate Pact with United States
Concluding a pact could placate Washington by agreeing on tougher emissions standards while recognizing the importance of the tar sands, located in the western province of Alberta. Extracting oil from the sands produces huge amounts of greenhouse gases. Canada is the largest single supplier of energy to the United States, accounting for around 9 percent of US oil consumption and 15 percent of US natural gas consumption. The two nations have worked together before on green issues, most notably in 1991, when they signed a landmark agreement to cut acid rain.
Are you ready to go on a carbon diet?
In Britain, carbon footprinting - used to measure environmental impact across a company's entire operations - is morphing into an eco-labeling tool. US retailers are hesitant to follow........ Patagonia... has a new Web-based effort called The Footprint Chronicles. By showing both the 'good' and 'bad' on the company's interactive website, a consumer can track a Wool 2 Crew sweater as it originates in New Zealand, travels to Malaysia for combing, then to Japan, where it's spun into yarn and knitted, then to California and Nevada for sewing and production. In all, that's 16,200 miles traveled……
Tell EPA: Act Now on Global Warming Pollution
Target: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Sponsored by: Earthjustice
In one of the most important environmental cases of its history, in early 2007, the Supreme Court affirmed: the Clean Air Act gives the Environmental Protection Agency the authority to fight global warming. The EPA must act immediately and issue regulations that limit global warming pollution. While this case (Massachusetts v. EPA) has worked its way through EPA and the courts, scientific evidence of global warming has continued to mount - so much so that the scientific debate is over. Our climate is warming, and pollution from human activities is to blame. The path forward is clear. Tell EPA that we can't wait any longer to begin the fight against global warming pollution.
The EPA needs your comments by November 28.

Why Green Jobs are Our Future
How much green can you make off a green job?
Since the 1970s, California's energy-efficiency programs have created 1.5 million jobs, increased payrolls by $45 billion, and yielded $56 billion in energy savings that went toward other consumer spending, according to a University of California at Berkeley study. David Roland-Holst, the study's author, said the state's new mandates to curb greenhouse gases and further efficiency measures will add 400,000 green jobs, $48 billion in household income, and $76 billion to the state's domestic product by 2020.
"If the country can follow California's example, it will have a dramatic effect on our future emissions and energy independence," Roland-Holst told the AP.

Court Ruling Protects Organic Farmers from Pesticide Drift
A Santa Cruz County jury has found that the unintended contamination of organic crops caused by pesticides evaporating after application violated the rights of a nearby organic crop grower. The ruling is the result of a case filed in May 2007 by Jacobs Farm/Del Cabo (Jacobs Farm) against pesticide application company Western Farm Service, Inc.
Nestle withdraws cereal product from US on pesticide concerns
The world's biggest food company Nestle said on Tuesday it was withdrawing from the United States a Brazil-manufactured milk cereal product that may contain traces of a pesticide not approved for the product in the US.
Nestle's spokeswoman told AFP that as no standard had been set for the level of the particular pesticide in the US for wheat, therefore, it believed that it may be asked to withdraw the product at some point. It was therefore taking a "preemptive action" by withdrawing the product called Nestle Farinha Lactea, she added. "As there is no standard set, we believe that at one point in time, the FDA would tell us to withdraw the product," she said.
She added however that the pesticide level in the product "is far below" limits in Brazil and in the European Union.
Legal tussle over modified sugar beets
Home gardeners seldom grow sugar beets, but the commercialization of [Monsanto's] Roundup Ready sugar beets could toss genetically engineered DNA into many a garden-fresh salad unless a lawsuit prevails.

With Michigan passing an embryonic stem cell research law, we feel it absolutely necessary to repeat:
Embryonic stem cell research involves the destruction of nascent human life. Adult stem cells have no such ethical issues. And just on a pragmatic basis, the choice should be clear by now. According to the website stemcellresearch.org, medical treatments derived from adult stem cells outnumber those derived from embryos 73-0.
Legal Prescription Drugs Kill Far More Than Illegal Drugs Nytimes.com
An analysis of autopsies in 2007 released this week by the Florida Medical Examiners Commission found that the rate of deaths caused by prescription drugs was three times the rate of deaths caused by all illicit drugs combined.
Natural Therapies for Asthma
Asthma is a serious, sometimes life-threatening respiratory disease that affects the quality of life for millions of Americans. Asthma causes swelling and irritation in your airways, making it hard for you to breathe. Asthma costs in Eastern Missouri total more than $75 million in lost school time, lost work time, and medicine and emergency room visits. Asthma can be controlled by taking medicine and avoiding the triggers that can cause an attack. Asthma attacks can be triggered by things like mold growing on your shower curtain or tiny dust mites that live in blankets, pillow, or your child's stuffed animals. There are many studies that have looked at a variety of ways to reduce the development of asthma, some successful and some not. Although there is no cure for asthma yet, asthma can be controlled through medical treatment and management of environmental triggers.
Symptoms: Symptoms vary widely from person to person and from situation to situation. Many people can have symptoms for years without being diagnosed, while others are mistakenly diagnosed with asthma. There are certain symptoms of asthma, including: tightness in the chest, wheezing sound, shortness of breath, persistent cough, and increased pulse or heart rate.
Senega Snake Root
Plant roots often assume a twisted, tortuous shape, hence the name snakeroot is an apt one. Senega root, seneca snakeroot refers to the yellow root of Polygala senega L., a perennial herb (family Polygalaceae) with small white flowers, native to the woodlands of eastern North America from southern Canada to South Carolina. Senega root is indigenous to central and western North America. Senega root is found in the woods and elsewhere on dry, rocky soil.
Medicinal Use: Senega root was one of the new remedies introduced into medicine by the Seneca Indians who valued it as a cure for rattlesnake bite. They made a poultice of it by chewing it up and then placed it on snakebites (after they had cut the bite and sucked out the poison). Today it is used as an antidote to many poisons. Other uses may include: to stimulate secretions; acute bronchial catarrh or pneumonia; for circulation, small pox, asthma, and diseases of the lungs. Modern herbalists continue to praise its virtues as an expectorant, diaphoretic (promotes perspiration), sialagogue (increases the flow of saliva), and emetic. It is said to be particularly good for asthma and bronchitis. Fresh senega root has a pleasant odor reminiscent of wintergreen.
